Philosophy Teacher Upper School – Australian Curriculum (WACE) – January 2026 Start

Position: Philosophy Teacher Upper School – Australian Curriculum (WACE) – 2026 School Year
We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified Philosophy teacher to join our team for the January 2026 school year. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching our required Year 10 Introduction to Philosophy course and the two-year WACE Philosophy and Ethics elective course (Years 11-12) for students who are bilingual or native speakers of English.
Responsibilities
The primary teaching responsibilities include:
– Year 10 Introduction to Philosophy (Required Course): Teaching fundamental philosophical tools and methodologies that foster critical thinking and rational inquiry, with emphasis on Socratic methodology and dialogue
– Years 11-12 WACE Philosophy and Ethics (Elective): Delivering the Western Australian Certificate of Education Philosophy and Ethics ATAR course across four units:
– Year 11: Unit 1 (Reason and persons), Unit 2 (Reason and culture)
– Year 12: Unit 3 (Reason and society), Unit 4 (Reason and meaning)
– Planning and implementing lessons targeting specific philosophical concepts and critical reasoning skills
– Managing classroom behavior to keep all students engaged in philosophical inquiry
– Providing individual support and feedback for students
– Teaching PBL (Problem- and Project-Based Learning) style lessons
– Facilitating philosophical Communities of Inquiry using Socratic dialogue methodology
– Preparing students for WACE external examinations
Additional responsibilities may include:
– Teaching English Language Arts/EAL or STEAM/Research classes as needed
– Homeroom duties and pastoral care responsibilities
Skills and Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree or higher in Philosophy, Education, or related field
– Teaching License
– Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching Philosophy at the high school level
– Familiarity with Socratic methodology and Community of Inquiry approaches
– Experience with critical reasoning instruction and argument analysis
– Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
– Ability to create engaging lesson plans that promote philosophical thinking and ethical reasoning
– Proficient in technology use for instruction purposes
– Experience facilitating respectful dialogue and debate on sensitive topics
Preferred Qualifications
– Strong knowledge of the WACE Philosophy and Ethics curriculum and assessment requirements
– Experience with the Australian curriculum system (WACE)
– Background in logic, critical thinking, or ethics instruction
– Experience teaching international or ESL students
– Familiarity with contemporary philosophical issues and their applications
