Assistant Principal (Academic: Teaching & Learning)

Rugby School Japan is seeking an outstanding and dynamic teacher and leader who will help lead the academic side of the School.

The Assistant Principal (Academic: Teaching & Learning) has been created as a new role for the School. It is a Senior Leadership position, with responsibility for ensuring the highest quality of teaching and learning throughout the School while preparing pupils for success in top universities worldwide. They will work to develop the reputation of Rugby School Japan as a centre of excellence in teaching and learning, and a centre of excellence for professional development.

Reporting to and working closely with the Deputy Principal (Academic) in all areas of academic strategy and policy, they will work closely with the academic HoDs and have line management responsibility for the individual academic programme coordinators: digital learning, scholarship, lower school and middle school. The position demands a deep understanding of international curricula, assessment frameworks, and pedagogical best practices. The successful candidate will possess the leadership and communications skills necessary to support and motivate others, and the organisational skills to manage the breadth of work that this role encompasses.

RSJ is the second international sister school of Rugby School, one of the UK’s most prestigious and well-known schools. It shares Rugby’s aims and ethos, and aspires to be one of Asia’s top schools. RSJ is an international co-educational day and boarding school for 11-18-year olds, located on a spectacular campus in Kashiwa-no-ha, 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo. The School opened in September 2023, offering its students Rugby’s academic and co-curricular programmes, leading to IGCSE and A-level studies, and access to the world’s leading universities. A Rugby education focuses upon the importance of developing the whole person.

Rugby is renowned for its highly successful and innovative approach to education. As a coaching school we are looking for staff who are committed to a professional obligation to improve as teachers and who value personal growth. 

The School is a boarding and day school in full operation seven days per week including evenings during term time. Pastoral, co-curricular, cultural and sports activities take place outside normal day-school hours and all staff are expected to contribute.

Interviews

Longlisted candidates will be interviewed on a rolling basis. Interviews will be online via video link.

Qualifications, Identification, Health and Background Checks

You will be required to bring documentation to the interview providing proof of your identity, including an attested (by a notary) birth certificate, and qualifications. If successful at interview, the position will be offered subject to satisfactory references and police checks. For all candidates, we will request the most recent DBS check and may require further background checks. We also require that anyone who is currently living and working in a country other than the UK must be able to provide a police check from the national checking agency. All references will be verified and we require a minimum of two references, one of whom must be your present, or most recent, employer.
