Head of Economics and Business

We are seeking an outstanding teacher and leader of Economics and Business who will be an ambitious and dynamic colleague who shares our vision of teaching as a vocation, and who will seize an exciting opportunity to work at Rugby School Japan (RSJ).

All teachers are expected to teach a range of age and ability groups from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form. Finance (a bespoke course that has been developed by the Department) is a compulsory subject for all pupils up to Year 9. This covers topics such as personal finance, the world of work and financial products, and is taught once a fortnight. In Years 10 and 11 we offer the Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies qualification, and Cambridge A-level Economics is a popular choice in the Sixth Form. In this appointment, we are looking for an experienced teacher who can teach Economics A-level to complement the skills and experiences of the second teacher in the Department.

Building upon the achievements of the founding Head of Department, the successful candidate will lead and develop the Economics and Business Department as a flagship department as the School enters its third year. The Department is currently reviewing the choice of exam board for future years, and the incoming Head of Department would have a say as to which exam board(s) to work with going forward.

Staff work closely together with other departments with a view to create exciting and innovative inter, multi and transdisciplinary learning experiences. There is scope to collaborate within the department in order to develop rigorous, engaging and creative lessons that bring the wider economic and business context to life.

The post holder will also be expected to make a full contribution to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the School.

RSJ is the second international sister school of Rugby School, one of the UK’s most prestigious and well-known schools. It shares Rugby’s aims and ethos, and aspires to be one of Asia’s top schools. RSJ is an international co-educational day and boarding school for 11-18-year olds, located on a spectacular campus in Kashiwa-no-ha, 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo. The School opened in September 2023, offering its students Rugby’s academic and co-curricular programmes, leading to IGCSE and A-level studies, and access to the world’s leading universities. A Rugby education focuses upon the importance of developing the whole person.

Rugby is renowned for its highly successful and innovative approach to education. As a coaching school we are looking for staff who are committed to a professional obligation to improve as teachers and who value personal growth.

The School is a boarding and day school in full operation seven days per week including evenings during term time. Pastoral, co-curricular, cultural and sports activities take place outside normal day-school hours and all staff are expected to contribute.
