The American School in Japan (ASIJ) seeks an experienced school leader to serve as its Director of Student Support (DoSS). Applicants should be inspired by ASIJ’s commitment to Know, Value, and Care for each child and our aspiration for students to become accountable leaders and positive difference-makers in an increasingly complex, diverse, and rapidly-changing world. The DoSS will provide critical leadership across divisions, ensuring that teachers and school leaders can recognize and nurture the unique potential of every child, while acting with fidelity to institutional goals around inclusion. In recent years, ASIJ has made significant progress in fostering inclusive, adaptive learning environments by integrating Deep Learning principles and implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Deep Learning, which focuses on six core competencies—Mindset, Global Citizenship, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking—has become a cornerstone of ASIJ’s educational approach, ensuring students engage meaningfully with real-world challenges while developing essential skills. The transition from a Medical Model of Disability to a Social Model grounded in UDL is well underway at ASIJ. The DoSS will continue to lead and refine this process, ensuring that all students benefit from flexible, inclusive learning environments that celebrate diverse learning styles. This shift aligns seamlessly with ASIJ’s Portrait of a Learner and our commitment to Deep Learning. The DoSS will ensure that UDL and Deep Learning are embedded across support strategies, empowering students to engage deeply with real-world challenges while developing the competencies necessary for success in an ever-changing world. The DoSS will be central to embedding Deep Learning within the student support framework, emphasizing the development of students’ metacognitive skills—helping them monitor, assess, and adapt their learning strategies. As students navigate complex, authentic challenges, the DoSS will work to create environments that not only support academic growth but also encourage students to take risks, collaborate, and reflect on their learning. By fostering inquiry-based learning, promoting student agency, and guiding students to apply their skills in meaningful, interdisciplinary contexts, the DoSS will play a pivotal role in ensuring students develop durable learning skills. Moreover, the DoSS will lead efforts to build a more inclusive support system, collaborating with educators to apply Deep Learning principles in ways that engage all learners, particularly those with diverse needs. Whether working to enhance learning experiences that elicit growth in PoL competencies or encouraging the community to continue to engage in human-centered educational practices, the DoSS will ensure that learning is deeply rooted in ASIJ’s vision for student success. In this role, the DoSS will support the holistic development of students, addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs while encouraging greater independence and self-advocacy. We are seeking a leader who is an exceptional collaborator and communicator, with the experience to lead complex change processes and guide ASIJ toward a future where Deep Learning and inclusive practices are seamlessly integrated.
